Origin of Maharaja Ganga Singh University
Maharaja Ganga Singh University (MGSU), Bikaner was established in the year 2003 by the Government of Rajasthan vide Act No. 18 of 2003 (The Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner Act, 2003). The university was carved out from the erstwhile University of Rajasthan to cater to the higher education needs of the Bikaner division and the surrounding arid region of western Rajasthan.
The university is proudly named after the visionary ruler Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji of Bikaner (1880–1943), who was one of the most progressive and far-sighted rulers of his time. Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji made extraordinary contributions to education, infrastructure, irrigation, and the overall development of the Bikaner region. He established numerous schools, colleges, hospitals and played a pivotal role in bringing the famous Gang Canal (Ganga Nahar) to the arid desert lands of Bikaner, transforming the region's agricultural landscape forever. His legacy of visionary leadership and commitment to public welfare continues to inspire the university's mission and values.
The university campus is strategically located on N.H.-15, Jaisalmer Road, Bikaner – 334004, Rajasthan, India. Spread over a sprawling campus, the university provides a serene and eco-friendly environment conducive to academic excellence and holistic development of students. The university has jurisdiction over the districts of Bikaner, Churu, Sri Ganganagar, and Hanumangarh, serving a vast population of students through its university-taught departments and affiliated colleges.
Since its inception, MGSU has grown into a prominent center of higher learning, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral programmes across multiple faculties including Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Education, and Social Sciences. Accreditation
Maharaja Ganga Singh University has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. The NAAC accreditation is a testament to the university's commitment to maintaining high standards of teaching, learning, research, and infrastructure.
The university is also recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956, making it eligible for receiving grants and funding from the central government.
